FERPA

How Penn State students can give permission for their education records to be shared with parents, employers, or other third parties, and what rules apply to that process.

Requests for Educational Records

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects the privacy of student education records by prohibiting their disclosure without the student’s written consent, except under limited circumstances. Students have the right to inspect and review their education record and may do so by making a written request to the Office of the Registrar by completing the Student Request Form. Students may choose to allow the release of their education records to specified third parties by completing the Student Consent for Release of Information to Third Parties. Please note that all fields listed in the form must be completed and that the student must sign and date the form. Please further note that while the form may authorize the University to release the student’s records, it does not obligate the University to do so. The Student Consent for Release of Information is a one-time authorization specific to the request at issue only. For additional information related to requests for student records, please see https://www.registrar.psu.edu/confidentiality/.
